Pear Tree Honey Farm origins

The business was founded in 1983 by John Whent, who had long had a fascination with bees, having kept them as a teenager.

After living in Australia, John returned to the UK and set up Pear Tree Honey Farm at Eppleby, near Richmond in North Yorkshire. The business operated from Eppleby for many years, as John worked tirelessly to develop the business. As the business grew, so did John's obsession, passion and knowledge for bees. John, a keen engineer, built and made much of the equipment used by the business, as well as the custom kitted out vehicles.

At a time when beekeepers and honey producers were scarce, John lead the field and held the record for many a year for the most amount of honey produced.

The Honey Farm today

'In 2017, Pear Tree Honey farm moved to it's current location, having out grown the previous site. Now sited at Moorhouse Farm, we have been able to expand the operation.

The farm is the base of our business, with the team of skilled apiarists working all year round. We attend to the bees far and wide, from the beautiful arable farmland locally, up to the rolling, rugged hills of the Dales.

Having streamlined the facilities at the farm, it has enabled us to extract and process large volumes of honey from the hives.

Currently, we sell honey to the commercial market, to honey packers and honey cooperatives all over the UK. We have a large quantity of bees and therefore large volumes of honey. We can deal with any size order, yet we are still a small family business, run by Paul Whent (John's son) and his team.

Paul has been bee keeping alongside his father for 22 years and loves working outdoors, in nature, with his bees.

Often referred to as the ‘Bee Man’ by people in the local area, Paul has worked hard to develop his knowledge of bees, breeding and increasing his hives over the years.

Paul is a beekeeper first and foremost. Working hard to care for the bees and in turn they work hard for him.

Paul has four young children, and they are keen to help him whenever they can, sharing his love of nature and the outdoors.
